What is the A+ rating?

Window Energy Ratings were introduced by the UK Government many years ago to help property owners know how thermally efficient windows. The window ratings are calculated by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). To calculate the rating they use an equation that looks at both how much heat is gained from sunlight and how good a product is at preventing heat from escaping.

The scale runs from A++ to G, with A++ being awarded to the most energy efficient windows. ‘C’ is the minimum to satisfy Building Regulations for windows. Are U values important?

Alongside a windows energy rating you will probably also see a U Value. A window’s U value is the technical way to measure heat loss through a type of building material. U values are calculated by the equation W/m2k, which measures heat loss in watts (W) per square metre of material, when the temperature (k) outside is at least one degree lower.
