Why UK homeowners need to choose A+ windows:

27 February 2020

On average windows make up 20% of the surface area of a buildings walls. To reduce heat loss from the household, it is important to ensure your windows are properly insulated and optimised for heat gain. Reducing heat loss through windows can help save you money on your energy bills and make your home more comfortable.

The Energy Saving Trust reported that as much as 20% of a home’s heat loss occurs through its windows and doors. If you have been looking into replacing your existing windows you have probably come across advertised energy rating such as A, A+ or even A++. So what do these ratings mean and why should homeowners choose A+ windows?

Benefits of energy efficient windows include:

Firstly lets look at the benefits of choosing energy efficient windows for your home.

  1. A more comfortable home – energy efficient glazing reduces heat loss through windows and means fewer draughts and cold spots.
  2. Energy savings. Energy efficient windows reduce energy costs by eliminating the need to overcompensate for air leakage and entry.
  3. Reduced noise – not only do they keep the heat in, energy efficient windows insulate your home against external sounds such as traffic noise.

What is the A+ rating?

Window Energy Ratings were introduced by the UK Government many years ago to help property owners know how thermally efficient windows. The window ratings are calculated by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). To calculate the rating they use an equation that looks at both how much heat is gained from sunlight and how good a product is at preventing heat from escaping.

The scale runs from A++ to G, with A++ being awarded to the most energy efficient windows. ‘C’ is the minimum to satisfy Building Regulations for windows. The rating system is ideal, as it clearly identifies the best performing windows. Stellar aluminium windows can achieve a Window Energy Rating of A+.

Are U values important?

Alongside a windows energy rating you will probably also see a U Value. A window’s U value is the technical way to measure heat loss through a type of building material. U values are calculated by the equation W/m2k, which measures heat loss in watts (W) per square metre of material, when the temperature (k) outside is at least one degree lower. The lower the U value, the better the insulation provided by the material. The Stellar System can achieve U-values as low as 1.1W/m2K.

Is it worth it?

With a number of financial benefits as well as their cost-saving benefits, A+ rated windows are well worth the investment. With energy bills on the increase on an almost yearly basis A+ rated glazing provides the ideal solution to a warmer, welcoming and more comforting home.

The Stellar Difference

The energy efficiency on Stellar windows is top notch – they can achieve a Window Energy Rating of A+ and achieve U-values as low as 1.1W/m2K. Insulation is a fundamental part of the design. This means Stellar windows meet Building Regulations without additional foams or expensive aerogels that rival systems use.
